Your Aging Shih Tzu
Your Aging Shih TzuIt seems impossible that 10 years have passed and your little vibrant puppy now prefers long naps in the sun and will only get up to eat, drink or relieve himself.  Your vet visits and bills are closer together and every time you leave the house you wonder how your furbaby is faring.

Old age has not been kind to my two Shih Tzu Dogs and I often wonder how other Shih Tzu owners are dealing as well.

  • Are Shih Tzu a more delicate breed?
  • Are they prone to more diseases than other breeds?

If your Shih Tzu is 7 or older you need to know what are the most common ailments that come with aging.  Not just to be prepared but also to be able to make your dog's life healthier and longer.  Also, with aging, a second type of puppyhood comes back and you will need to devote a bit more time to your dog.  You will need to adapt for this.

To me, it was a complete surprise.  Even though I realized that I was taking Archie to the vet more and more often than before, I was in denial.  After all, Shih Tzu live to be 13 and I had a previous Shih Tzu mix that was perfectly healthy at age 10.

The most common ailments for an aging dog are:

  • Diabetes
  • OsteoArthritis
  • Kidney disease
  • Urinary Incontinence / Urinary tract problems
  • Eye problems: cataracts & glaucoma
  • Digestive problems, Constipation
  • Dental problems

I found valuable articles on each of these subjects in the web.  Note that some articles have the same name but they do not have the same content.

Please remember, it is best to work together with your vet in the care of your older Shih Tzu. I was reluctant at first, until I realized this was a long term issue, so I had to trust them (but I still do my research on the side, and you should too!!!!!!!!).

There are several books that help you learn more about this, I have reviewed two of them here in the site

  • Your Older dog by Jean Callahan - Click Here for the Shih Tzu magazine review
Chapter 4: A guide to age related health problems, page 88

  • The Doctor’s Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats  - Click here for the Shih Tzu Magazine Review
    Aging – 13 lifelong tips, page 22
Arthritis – 13 ways to ease the aches, page 41
Cataracts – 4 clear tips for cloudy eyes, page 113
Dental Problems – 17 ways to lick them, page 156
    Diabetes – 7 helpful hints, page 174
Urinary tract infections – 4 helpful hints , page 424

  • Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook - View Information at Amazon.com
    Geriatrics – Chapter 19, page 491

I know all this information seems overwhelming, but the truth is, when dealing with an older dog, you often wonder what you can do to help as you watch him/her struggle, and the vet's responses can be frustrating at times(meaning, it's old age, there is nothing you can do).
