| Your Aging Shih Tzu |
It seems impossible that 10 years have passed and your little vibrant puppy now prefers long naps in the sun and will only get up to eat, drink or relieve himself. Your vet visits and bills are closer together and every time you leave the house you wonder how your furbaby is faring. Old age has not been kind to my two Shih Tzu Dogs and I often wonder how other Shih Tzu owners are dealing as well.
If your Shih Tzu is 7 or older you need to know what are the most common ailments that come with aging. Not just to be prepared but also to be able to make your dog's life healthier and longer. Also, with aging, a second type of puppyhood comes back and you will need to devote a bit more time to your dog. You will need to adapt for this. To me, it was a complete surprise. Even though I realized that I was taking Archie to the vet more and more often than before, I was in denial. After all, Shih Tzu live to be 13 and I had a previous Shih Tzu mix that was perfectly healthy at age 10. The most common ailments for an aging dog are:

I know all this information seems overwhelming, but the truth is, when dealing with an older dog, you often wonder what you can do to help as you watch him/her struggle, and the vet's responses can be frustrating at times(meaning, it's old age, there is nothing you can do). |
