Could you own a Shih Tzu?
They look so cute when they are small, but can you keep up? The Shih Tzu needs a lot of grooming and is a very stubborn animal.

You may wonder, what on earth is this about! Of course I could be a Shih Tzu owner! They are just dogs!!

The fact of the matter is, a Shih Tzu is a big responsibility. Any dog or pet is for that matter, but a Shih Tzu is not simply just a pet. Its a HIGH MAINTENANCE pet.

Shih Tzu's can be independent. They don't need you to be around 24 hours a day, but they do need human interaction.

Here are some things to consider.
  • Shih Tzus need to be brushed daily, without skipping a day.
  • Shih Tzus need to be fed high quality foods because they are prone to allergies or skin problems.
  • Any dog needs to be fed and go out at least twice a day.
  • Shih Tzus can be very stubborn and can resist house training or obedience training (but they do learn).
  • Coat care can be expensive and so can be a visit to a groomer.
There are many more things to take into consideration. When I decided to take on Archie I researched the breed and knew what I was getting myself into. However that didn't keep me from making a lot of mistakes.

So before you go to a breeder for a cute Shih Tzu puppy, think about it. They are certainly cute, but they can be a lot of work and a lot of serious responsibility.

And remember.. PUPPIES ARE A LOT OF WORK!!!! and if you are a parent, no matter how much you say the puppy is for your children, you will probably end up changing water twice a day, serving food, taking puppy out or giving him a bath. Plus house training is a real hassle, and one must be patient (up until the 7th or 9th month or even until the dog is one year old). Believe me its not always easy!
